Descript combines transcript-based audio/video editing with recording and AI-assisted production tools. For interviews and spoken-word videos, editing the transcript can make the workflow easier to understand. We have not timed a real editing project in Descript, so this review does not claim a measured 50–70% time saving or award a numeric score.

The workflow to evaluate
Start with a recording you own, check the transcript against the audio, make a small cut and play the join back. Then export a short section and check captions, synchronisation and sound. A transcript is an editing interface, not a guarantee that names, accents or timing are correct. Descript’s official feature and plan comparison lists text-based editing, recording and tools such as Studio Sound and Underlord; access and limits depend on the plan. Current pricing, with the billing interval made clear
The checked public US-dollar pricing page lists Hobbyist at $24 per person/month on monthly billing or $16 per month billed annually; Creator is $35 monthly or $24 annually; Business is $65 monthly or $50 annually. These annual figures are monthly equivalents, not a monthly subscription payable at the same rate. The page lists 10/30/40 media hours and 400/800/1,500 monthly AI credits respectively. Confirm currency, tax, seats and any promotion at checkout. We have removed the ambiguous “from $16/month” presentation and obsolete feature-count promises.
Media allowances and AI credits are separate
Descript’s usage guide distinguishes media minutes from AI credits and explains their shared team pools. Estimate both: a long interview can consume media allowance, while repeated AI revisions can consume credits. Do not assume that every tool, a free plan or an older subscription has the same allowance. Record the balance before and after a representative task to understand the cost of your workflow.
Who should consider it?
Shortlist Descript if your work is centred on interviews, podcasts, tutorials or talking-head clips and you want to edit through words. For precise visual compositing, complex colour work or specialised sound design, first compare the export and handoff with your existing production tools. The useful test is a complete small project: import, correct, edit, export and revise it. Measure your own time and inspect the result. This review describes that decision process; it does not present a trial that we did not conduct. Voice-cloning and generated-media features also require permission for the material and voices involved.
