Runway combines video generation with editing and performance-capture tools. This review examines its creative workflow and credit model, including corrected Gen-4.5 costs and plan-specific rollover rules.
The short version: Runway offers a broad creative workflow, including generation, Aleph editing and Act-Two performance capture. Choose a plan against the models and tools you actually use. Its credit rules vary by plan and credit type; the corrected calculation and official sources are set out below. We have removed the undated “number one” benchmark claim.
What is Runway?
Runway is a New York-based AI research company (it describes its mission as building “General World Models”) whose video platform is used by filmmakers, advertising agencies and studios — Netflix has used it in production, and it has formal partnerships with NVIDIA and Lionsgate. It rebranded from “Runway ML” to simply “Runway,” and its earlier Gen-2 and Gen-3 models have given way to the current Gen-4 and flagship Gen-4.5.
Runway combines generation and editing tools in one workspace. A useful evaluation is to take a representative brief through the whole process, including failed attempts, revision time and export, rather than assume a campaign-cost saving from an anecdote.

Gen-4.5 — flagship generation
Gen-4.5 is a video-generation option within Runway’s model range. We have not established a dated, independent leaderboard position for this review. Compare representative prompts, consistency and editing needs in your own evaluation rather than treating an undated rank as a guarantee.
Aleph — edit video with a prompt
Aleph is Runway’s most transformative feature. It’s an in-video editing system that modifies a finished clip through text prompts — remove an object, relight a scene, change the style, “add rain” — while keeping every frame temporally consistent, no full regeneration required. Work that once meant hours of frame-by-frame compositing becomes a sentence. Nothing else in the category does this as well.
Act-Two — performance capture
Act-Two (the successor to Act-One) drives a character’s performance from a video of a real actor, transferring facial expression and movement onto generated characters. For narrative and dialogue-driven work it’s a genuine production tool, not a gimmick.
A complete creative pipeline
The polish is in the workflow: Motion Brush to direct specific movement, Director Mode for camera control, frame interpolation, Extend Video to chain clips, ProRes/alpha-channel export for compositing, plus reference images, image generation and an audio tab for sound effects and voices. It’s the pipeline working professionals consistently say they prefer.
A multi-model marketplace
The quiet shift of 2026 is that one Runway subscription now also unlocks third-party models — Google Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0 Pro, Seedance and image models like FLUX and Seedream — from the same dashboard. If you’d otherwise juggle several AI video subscriptions, Runway can replace them.

Runway’s appeal is the combination of generation, prompt-based editing and performance capture. Whether that combination saves time depends on your project and the tools you already use. Compare the whole workflow, not only the first generated clip.

This is a source-based review, updated on 3 October 2026. We checked the official documentation for the corrections below; we did not run a hands-on product benchmark. We removed the previous numerical scorecard because it did not document a reproducible test. Other feature descriptions should be confirmed against the provider’s current documentation before purchase.
Pricing
Rates checked on 3 October 2026: the official credit guide lists Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second, or 60 for a five-second generation and 120 for ten seconds. A 625-credit allowance therefore covers ten five-second generations with 25 credits remaining, assuming no other use. Runway’s pricing page separates annual and monthly billing.

Monthly credits expire on the billing date for Standard, Pro and Unlimited. Max and Team allow up to one month of unused credits to roll over. Purchased credits and the Free plan’s one-time credits do not expire. Workspace and API credits are separate. Confirm model-specific generation and upscaling costs before ordering; a blanket “4K multiplies the cost” rule is not supported by the current plan page.

Model choice depends on the workflow. If synchronised audio is essential, inspect the selected model’s current audio capabilities as well as separate sound tools. We have not verified a universal quality winner or a current leaderboard rank.
Who is Runway for?
Runway may suit filmmakers, agencies and motion designers who use generation and editing together. Choose a plan after measuring a typical workflow. If audio, cost or a specific export format is essential, compare the selected model and plan against those requirements.

If native dialogue and sound matched to the footage in one pass matters, Veo is the stronger choice.
