Confident AI is a platform around LLM evaluation, tracing and quality workflows; DeepEval is its separately documented evaluation framework. Distinguish the framework you can use in code from the hosted service, allowances and enterprise controls. This review uses primary documentation and does not claim a measured reduction in failures or operating costs.

The framework and platform
The DeepEval overview describes evaluation support for LLM applications. The hosted plan comparison includes evaluation runs, tracing and dataset-related workflows, with plan-specific limits. A dashboard or a large metric menu is not proof of reliable evaluation. Choose metrics that match a failure you can recognise and provide examples with known outcomes.
Pricing correction
The checked plan page lists a free tier with two seats, one project and five test runs per week; Starter at $200/month; Team at $2,000/month; and custom enterprise pricing. Trace allowances and excess usage differ by plan. These are dated public figures, not a quote for your deployment. We no longer suggest unlimited hosted evaluation merely because a framework is available, or repeat vendor “cheapest” comparisons as independent findings.
What to evaluate
Create a small set of correct answers, unsupported answers and plausible but wrong answers. Check whether a chosen metric separates them. When an LLM judges another LLM, record the judge model and prompt and rerun borderline cases. Track disagreements with human review, not just the average score. Confirm which data leaves your application and how traces are retained. This suggested protocol has not been executed against Confident AI in this assessment.
Verdict
Consider the hosted platform when shared datasets, annotations and trace review are worth the subscription and integration effort. Use an in-code framework when you mainly need a reproducible local or CI evaluation process. Neither choice establishes a universal accuracy gain. We have removed the unsupported numeric rating and market-leadership claims; the fit depends on your test cases, reviewers and privacy requirements.
